While we await more answers about how saturated fats and trans fats affect stroke risk, follow these suggestions to help stop stroke in its tracks:
- Control blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure to normal levels may cut your stroke risk by 40%.
- Maintain a healthy weight. A sensible diet and exercise can curb stroke risk.
- Don’t smoke. Counseling and nicotine-replacement products can help you kick the habit and cut stroke risk.
- Consume alcohol only in moderation. In general, men are advised to drink no more than two alcoholic beverages a day; women no more than one.
