Heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease is a common complication in older adults with diabetes. However, many men and women over age 65 with type 2 diabetes may not be getting the treatment they need to protect their heart. After reviewing the records of more than 12,000 patients, researchers in Canada found that fewer than 25% of adults older than 65 who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes had received aspirin to help prevent blood clots in the year after diagnosis. In addition, only about 40% received drugs for high blood pressure, and just over 21% received medication to lower their high cholesterol levels—high blood pressure and cholesterol being two risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Based on current treatment guidelines, most people with diabetes qualify for such treatment. If you are an older person with diabetes and not taking medication to protect your heart, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider.
