Metastatic Cancer: Symptoms

Some people with metastatic tumors have no or minimal symptoms. However, when symptoms of metastatic cancer do occur, the type and frequency depend on the size and location of the metastases.

For example, cancer that spreads to the bones is likely to cause pain, numbness and weakness in the abdomen and legs, and fractures. However, cancer that spreads to the lungs can cause a cough, chest pain or shortness of breath.

Other general signs and symptoms of metastatic cancer include:

  • Loss of energy and feeling tired and/or weak
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Pain, such as back pain (for cancer that's spread to the spine)
