Meet Marian E. Gilmore: 2013 ONN Semifinalist
Marian, RN, OCN, Nurse Navigator, practices at the Multi-Specialty Clinic Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, MA.
Patient Denise B. shares how this oncology nurse navigator made a difference in her life:
“My whole life I have been told I have a gift for writing but hearing the words 'you have cancer' put me into a state of second-guessing everything in my life. I just hope I can do this story justice. Three months before I was diagnosed with colon cancer, I was celebrating the fact I had just finished five years of being breast cancer-free! As you can imagine, it hit me like a bomb. Everything happened so fast but I remember thinking how lucky I was to be referred to a wonderful surgeon; then I had a second blessing arrive in my life—meeting my nurse navigator, Marian Gilmore. She not only calmed me down immediately but I felt an instant connection. She became my personal angel. She took care of me every day.
Even though I am older, this experience has taught me that we truly never know from day to day where this journey of life will take us. What I do know for sure is that having a nurse like Marian by your side is what is needed. I am today cancer-free.
I hope I never have to recommend Marian, my nurse navigator, to anyone I love but if I have to, I would not hesitate because I know they would be in the best hands. I now look forward to enjoying my grandchildren.” —Denise B.
