The Heart Truth™ about women’s health
Feburary 2008
When you hear the term heart disease, what’s your first reaction? If you think, “That’s a man’s disease” and “not my problem,” you’re far from alone. But here’s The Heart Truth: Heart disease is the No.-1 killer of women in the United States.
Although some women believe cancer is a bigger health threat, heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. In fact, one in four women in this country dies of heart disease. And even when it doesn’t kill, heart disease can lead to disability and significantly decrease a woman’s quality of life.
The Heart Truth Campaign
To raise public awareness of the dangers of heart disease in women, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and partner organizations are sponsoring The Heart Truth. This national campaign is designed to give women an urgent wakeup call about their heart disease risk. NHLBI also provides tools to help women develop heart-healthy lifestyles. (See http://www.hearttruth.gov.)
The Heart Truth campaign messages are paired with the Red Dress™. In 2002, The Heart Truth introduced the Red Dress as a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness to remind women of the need to protect their heart health and inspire them to take action.
National Wear Red Day
