  • Outsmart vaginal irritation. Diabetes can damage the nerves in the vagina, lessening pleasure. Add the vaginal dryness that comes with menopause and your love life can easily suffer. A vaginal lubricant or prescription vaginal estrogen cream can lessen inflammation of the vaginal walls, says Dr. Thomas. Pierott’s certain that her healthier diet and exercise have halted her urinary-tract infections—and even aroused a sleepy libido: “I’m getting my diva back,” she says, laughing.
  • Be self-centered. “I’m focusing on me and putting my health first, managing both my diabetes and menopause,” says Pierott. “That’s a shift.”
